How To Tell If Your Cat Is Overweight

It can be hard to determine if your cat is overweight or not because different breeds have different healthy weights. The size of your cat will also play a role in whether or not they are overweight making this harder to determine. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that you can determine if your cat is overweight without taking them to the vet.

Evaluate Their Body

Looking at your cat can give you a good idea as to whether or not they are overweight. When looking at your cat from above, you should focus on the area between the hips and ribs. This area should move inwards slightly to create a defined waist. If your cat does not have this, or the waist is wider than the hips and ribs, your cat is overweight.

You should also look at your cat from the side because they should have an abdominal tuck. The area just behind their ribs is meant to have a smaller width than the chest and this is known as the abdominal tuck. If your cat is missing this, they may be overweight.

Touch The Ribs

You can also check if your cat is overweight by touching their ribs. You need to run your hand along your cat’s sides to check their ribs. If your cat is a good weight, you should be able to feel where the ribs are. If you are unable to feel their rubs or you have to push to get to the ribs, your cat may be overweight.

Feel The Base Of The Tail

Another way that you can check if your cat is overweight is to look at the base of the tail. Close to the base of the tail, you should be able to feel bones. There is going to be a thin layer of fat protecting the area, but you should be able to reach the bones easily. If you cannot easily feel the bones at the base of the tail, your cat may be overweight.

Do Not Be Worried About A Saggy Belly

A lot of people assume their cat is overweight because they have a saggy belly. If your cat has a bit of flesh which hangs between their back legs, they might not be overweight. If you are able to feel the bones in the other areas of the body, your cat is still within the healthy weight range. This flesh is the primordial pouch which is used to protect their stomach during fights.
